Today we’re joined by former educator and education champion Julie Valluet, who is working on bringing a Sudbury school to the Kansas City area. When Julie first heard about the revolutionary Sudbury education model, akin to “unschooling,” she immediately knew she wanted to start one in the area. The Sudbury school model was born in Massachusetts in 1968 in the town of Framingham, after a group of dedicated teachers and parents came together to provide a more meaningful education for their children. Sudbury schools are democratically run together by students and staff to ensure the safety and peaceful daily lives of everyone.
In this model, life is the curriculum. This means that children, just like adults, are treated as people who have rights and who can be trusted to make their own decisions and choices about their education. Based on evidence from anthropology, psychology and history that children naturally learn by playing, experimenting and interacting, this means that there is no curriculum, no required academics and no testing. Students are entirely free to pursue their own interests at their own pace throughout the day.
