Ep22. Radiate Gratitude with Traci Sorell

1/29/2019

This episode is the result of a “driveway moment,” when I stayed in the car to finish listening to an interview with author Traci Sorell on KCUR, the local NPR affiliate. Traci was talking about her first book and its themes of gratitude, diversity, and inclusion—and I was hooked.

Traci writes fiction and nonfiction books as well as poems for children. Her debut nonfiction picture book, We Are Grateful: Otsaliheliga, features the universal value of gratitude through a panorama of modern-day Cherokee cultural practices and experiences across the four seasons. Illustrated by Frané Lessac and published by Charlesbridge Publishing, the book is a 2019 Orbis Pictus Honor Book, a Junior Library Guild selection, and featured on the 2018 Best Books lists for Kirkus, School Library Journal, NPR and Chicago Public Library. We Are Grateful: Otsaliheliga has also received starred reviews from Kirkus Reviews, School Library Journal, The Horn Book and Shelf Awareness.

Traci is an enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Nation and lives in northeastern Oklahoma, where her tribe is located. For more about Traci and her forthcoming works, visit www.tracisorell.com. #tracisorell, #otsaliheliga, #kidlit, #Cherokee

Ep21. Radiate Healthy Longevity with Donna K. Kelly

Today we welcome back Donna Kelly, Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, about long lifespans and more importantly, long healthspans.

In our discussion, Donna talks about actionable steps you can implement to live a healthier life. It’s good to remember that it is never too late to pick up and practice healthy habits!

Incorporating 4 of the following 16 qualities into your life may add 14 healthy years to your life.

Incorporating 5 of the following 16 qualities increases the likelihood of living past 90, with fewer diseases, and possibly a lower risk of contracting Alzheimer’s.

These are the lifestyle qualities of independently-living centenarians, no matter where they live:
1. Have low blood sugar (fasting less than 100mg/ml).
2. Have low blood pressure (target: 115/75 in midlife).
3. Have low total cholesterol (less than 200) and low LDL cholesterol (less than 100).
4. Keep weight low and steady (BMI 18.5-25). (A better indicator could be a waist circumference of < 35 inches for women and < 40 inches for men. This may indicate less toxic visceral fat around the organs)
5. Eat fewer calories—stop eating when 80% full.
6. Eat a mostly plant-based “Mediterranean diet” with coffee and tea. Making the coffee and tea decaffeinated would optimize that approach.
7. Avoid nutritional deficiencies—eat a rainbow of colors each day.
8. Move regularly, be active, and stay busy after retirement.
9. Don’t smoke, and stop smoking if you do. This includes vaping.
10. Drink less alcohol. It is not a health food and is harmful to your liver.
11. Get regular and restful sleep—aim for 7-8 hours each night.
12. Have healthy gums.
13. Challenge your mind.
14. Have a positive mindset; address anxiety and depression.
15. Shed stressors, have structure in day-to-day living, and be resilient.
16. Stay socially connected.

Ep 19. Radiate Solace with Crystal Weber

Today we’re talking with Sharing Solace founder Crystal Webster. Crystal is no stranger to grief. Less than a week after finding out she was pregnant with her first child, her beloved aunt and uncle were tragically killed. Her daughter, Madelyn Elizabeth, was born May 19th, 2010 only to transition the following day in her arms. Crystal was told that not only did she have a genetic condition that was passed to Madelyn, causing her to be unable to survive on her own—it would also be passed to any of Madelyn’s siblings. Three years and three rounds of intense IVF later, Madelyn is still destined to be an only child.

Madelyn’s love and legacy live on through the mission of Sharing Solace, a community of grievers for grievers, through tangible gifts of solace and a meaningful community. Crystal knows she is guided by her angel, Madelyn, to help others grieve in a thoughtful way and to help their friends and family support the journey.
