Ep141 Radiate Courage with Jessie Gray

Jessie Gray, the visionary of Flying Pig Improv in Wichita, Kansas, loves working and playing with people who want to soar. To do that in improv, she creates a safe and fun environment where teachers, attorneys, artists, film-makers, restaurant servers, entrepreneurs, caregivers, performers - literally, everyone, can take risks, explore their own genius, and literally celebrate “mistakes” as they make them. Every game, every scene is an opportunity for gold. And each person in the room makes a huge impact on the experience.

Jessie has more than 40 years of stage experience from coast to coast as an actor, director, producer and choreographer.

A few years ago, she became fascinated with the spontaneous and unscripted world of improv. After intensive study in the San Francisco Bay Area (where she lived for almost 30 years), she began to perform, and then to teach classes, and then to direct and coach improv troupes weekly. She was a regular performing troupe member of Awkward Face at Pan Theater in Oakland, CA, and Flash Mob Musical Improv in San Francisco. She also teaches an annual workshop at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico as part of the summer Creative Arts Festival as well as other improv workshops around the country by request.

A theater alumnae from Wichita State University, she learned from the best: Dr. Richard Welsbacher, Joyce Cavarozzi, Mary Jane Teall, Audrey Needles, and Gina Austin-Fresh among others. She also was a student of improv notables in California’s Bay Area, which include David Alger, David Razowsky, Rachael Hamilton, Tracy Burns, Mick Laugs, and Los Angeles-based Meisner coach, Matt Chait. And now she has brought her vast experience and deep knowledge back to her hometown of Wichita, Kansas, where she has built a new improv home at Flying Pig Improv.

Check out Flying Pig Improv’s classes, workshops, and performance schedule at flyingpigimprov.com.

Lionel Friedberg is an Emmy Award-winning film and T.V. producer and writer. Lionel grew up in South Africa and began his career at the first television station in Central Africa in Northern Rhodesia, now Zambia, in 1961. He worked as a Director of Photography on 18 feature films and wrote, produced and directed for National Geographic, PBS and national broadcast and cable networks including the Discovery Channel, A&E and The History Channel. He is also a New York Times bestselling author. He is based in Los Angeles, California.

His book Forever in My Veins: How Film Led Me To The Mysterious World Of The African Shaman from 0 Books, o-books.com, is full of the observations that have taught him that life is far more complex and infinitely stranger than we can imagine. When he was struck by an unexpected life-threatening illness, his efforts to find a way to save his life took him back to Africa, where he encountered the age-old rituals and powerful healing methods of African shamans. Their mysterious ways have much to teach us and are as relevant today as they were in ancient times.

You can find Lionel online at lionelfriedberg.com, on Facebook @LionelFriedbergAuthor, on Twitter @FriedbergLionel, and on Instagram @LionelFriedberg.
