essential oils

What are essential oils?
Essential oils are the compounds that come from the flowers, leaves, stems, bark, resin and roots of plants. There are thousands of essential oil compounds that have been used by humans for thousands of years to enhance quality of life. Essential oils are 75-100 times more concentrated than the plants they come from. Because essential oils are concentrated, they are powerful and must be treated as such.

How to use essential oils
Aromatic: Diffused through the air by breaking water and essential oils into millions of microparticles. The oils then travel through your respiratory and limbic system, interacting with the brain, lungs, and blood.
Topical: Oils are applied to the skin, typically diluted in a carrier oil, to an affected part of the body, allowing for localized effects. Oils can also be applied—carefully, as sensitivities can occur—without a carrier oil.
Internal: Oils can also be taken internally, usually with food, liquid, or by vegetable capsule with a carrier oil. However, these effects are the most powerful and we recommend consulting a healthcare provider before taking internally.

Recipe for: Pick-me-up spray
  • One 2-3 oz. spray bottle
  • 5 drops organic orange essential oil
  • 3 drops organic peppermint essential oil
  • 2-3 oz. aloe vera juice
  • A bit of distilled water
Fill the spray bottle halfway with aloe vera juice, add essential oil and finish with the distilled water. Shake well.

This simple recipe is so versatile, and any essential oil can be substituted depending on the purpose of the spray. A small amount of liquid carrier oil can even be added to the mix to make it a bit more moisturizing.

There are a variety of brands that produce essential oils, YoungLiving and doTERRA being the most widely-known. N8 Essentials is a new company (launched October 2017) located in Olathe, Kansas, selling certified organic products.
